The BTL Z41X-16 Rising Stem Gate Valve is an industrial isolation valve featuring a rising stem design. During operation, the valve stem moves vertically upward or downward, allowing users to identify the valve’s open or closed status from a distance. This product complies with European design standards BS5163, EN558 & ISO 5752 Series-3 and is specifically designed for urban water supply and drainage networks, industrial park infrastructure, and fire protection pumping stations.

Operating Principle of the BTL Rising Stem Gate Valve

Similar to other types of gate valves, the BTL rising stem gate valve operates through the vertical movement of the valve stem to open or shut off the flow of the medium.

  • Opening the valve: When the handwheel is turned in the opening direction (typically counterclockwise), the stem nut fixed to the handwheel transmits torque to the threaded section of the valve stem. The valve stem moves vertically upward, lifting the gate away from the pipeline and fully opening the passage for the flow to pass through.
  • Closing the valve: The process is reversed when closing the valve. When the handwheel is turned in the closing direction (clockwise), the valve stem moves downward. The gate is lowered to its lowest position, while the EPDM rubber coating around the gate is pressed tightly against the valve body, creating a seal across the entire cross-section and completely stopping the flow of the medium.

Practical Applications of the BTL Z41X-16 Rising Stem Gate Valve

Due to its specific rising stem design, this type of valve must be installed in locations that meet two essential conditions: sufficient clearance above the valve and convenient visibility of its open/closed status. Common installation locations include:

  • Water supply pumping stations and fire protection pump rooms: These are key installation locations where the valve is often installed immediately downstream of the pumping station, on the main water supply pipelines. This allows firefighters or technicians to quickly determine whether the fire protection water supply system is open or closed.
  • Above-ground pipelines: Installed on pipelines running along technical corridors, factory walls, apartment buildings, or exposed supports. The exposed stem allows technicians to easily lubricate and perform periodic maintenance.
  • Wastewater and chemical treatment plants: Since the valve stem is located outside the valve body and does not come into contact with the internal fluid, rising stem gate valves are preferred for installation in distribution valve assemblies at wastewater and chemical treatment plants, helping protect the stem threads from corrosion caused by the medium.
  • Irrigation systems, canals, and discharge dams: Commonly installed at discharge outlets and raw water pumping stations due to their ability to withstand mechanical loads during operation.

Installation note: Rising stem gate valves are not suitable for installation in locations with low ceilings, shallow valve chambers, deep submerged pits, or underground applications. Limited space may not provide sufficient clearance for the valve stem during operation. In addition, high humidity can accelerate corrosion of the exposed stem, while dirt and sand may accumulate in the stem threads, causing the valve to become stuck.

Important Notes for Operation and Maintenance

  • Operation: Gate valves should only be used for fully opening or fully closing the flow. They are not recommended for long-term flow regulation in a partially closed position, as the high flow velocity through the narrow opening can cause localized erosion of the rubber-coated gate surface.
  • Periodic maintenance: Check the sealing condition of the O-ring around the valve stem, as this is one of the areas most susceptible to leakage over time due to the repeated movement of the stem during opening and closing cycles. Regularly lubricate the threads between the stem components to prevent sticking and difficulty turning the handwheel.
  • Check the stem travel clearance: For large sizes (DN300 and above, with H2 exceeding 1300 mm), ensure that there are no obstacles above the valve throughout its entire opening travel to prevent impacts that could bend or break the valve stem.
