The stainless steel gear operated butterfly valve (also called a handwheel butterfly valve) is a butterfly valve that uses a handwheel combined with a worm gearbox to open and close. The worm and worm wheel drive mechanism increases the output torque, so the operator can control the valve more easily than with a lever operated butterfly valve. This is especially true for large valve sizes or when a high operating force is required.

In this article, An Phu Thanh introduces the construction, operating principle, dimensions, the differences between the stainless steel gear operated butterfly valve and the stainless steel lever operated butterfly valve, and important notes on selection and installation.

Construction and operating principle of the stainless steel gear operated butterfly valve

Basically, the stainless steel gear operated butterfly valve has the same main parts as the stainless steel lever operated butterfly valve, including the body, disc, stem, and seat. The difference lies in the operating mechanism: instead of a lever handle, the valve is fitted with a handwheel combined with a worm gearbox.

Inside the gearbox, the worm and worm wheel mechanism transmits motion from the handwheel to the valve stem. When the operator turns the handwheel, the worm wheel turns with it and rotates the disc through about 90°, corresponding to closing or opening the valve. Thanks to the gear ratio of the gearbox, the force needed to operate is reduced, making control more convenient.

Some worm gearboxes have a self-locking characteristic, which helps limit unintended reverse movement. However, the actual ability to hold position also depends on the gearbox design and the operating conditions of each product.

How does the stainless steel gear operated butterfly valve differ from the lever operated type?

Operating effortRises quickly with size and pressure differenceLight thanks to the gearbox
Opening/closing speedFastSlower
Position controlThe lever can be locked at set notchesPosition can be adjusted gradually, more convenient
Size rangeDN40 to DN200DN40 to DN1200

ApplicationSmall pipelines, systems needing fast opening and closingMedium and large pipelines, pump stations, water supply and drainage systems

When should you choose a stainless steel gear operated butterfly valve instead of a lever operated one?

For pipelines of DN200 and above, you should almost by default use a gear operated butterfly valve. This is because closing a lever at large sizes is impractical when there is a pressure difference. For smaller pipelines, choose the stainless steel gear operated butterfly valve in the following cases:

  • You need to regulate flow frequently, or hold the valve at a fixed opening angle for a long time.
  • The pipeline has vibration or pressure fluctuation, which easily makes a lever drift.
  • You need slow closing. Closing a valve quickly on a long water pipeline can cause water hammer; the handwheel lets you close it gradually.
  • The valve is hard to reach, or it is inconvenient for the operator to squeeze a lever.

Conversely, if the pipeline is small and the operator wants faster opening and closing at a lower cost, choose a lever operated butterfly valve. See also the stainless steel lever operated butterfly valve HERE.

Installation locations of the stainless steel gear operated butterfly valve and points to note

The gear operated butterfly valve is commonly used in water supply, wastewater treatment, pump stations, HVAC/chiller systems, and industrial pipelines. Thanks to the gearbox assist mechanism, this valve is especially suitable for locations where large valves must be operated or where the opening must be controlled gradually.

Typical installation locations of the stainless steel gear operated butterfly valve

1. Water supply and water treatment pipelines

  • Main water pipelines and distribution pipelines.
  • Inlets and outlets of storage tanks, and pipelines that must be isolated for maintenance.
  • Large-diameter pipelines where the valve must be opened/closed through a gearbox.

2. Pump stations and wastewater systems

  • Pump suction or discharge pipelines, depending on the system design.
  • Pipeline branches that must be isolated during equipment repair.
  • Locations with large valves where the operating force must be reduced.

3. HVAC/chiller systems

  • Chilled water supply and return pipelines.
  • Branches connecting chillers, pumps, and heat exchange equipment.
  • Points where equipment must be isolated for periodic maintenance.

4. Industrial pipelines

  • Pipelines carrying liquids compatible with the valve body and seat materials.
  • Process lines, circulation lines, and distribution branches.
  • Locations that require controlled opening/closing operation.

Points to note when installing a gear operated butterfly valve

1. Choose a location with enough operating space

Provide clearance to turn the handwheel, operate the valve, and remove the gearbox during maintenance. Avoid placing the stainless steel gear operated butterfly valve close to walls, ceilings, or equipment that obstructs access.

2. Ensure concentricity between the valve and the pipeline

The two flanges must be aligned, of the correct size and standard. Do not use bolts to pull a misaligned pipeline into position against the butterfly valve, as this can put stress on the valve body and reduce its sealing.

3. Check the stem direction and the disc clearance

Confirm that the disc can rotate through its full stroke without hitting the pipe wall, the seat, or internal parts. For pipelines with sediment, consider the stem orientation and install the valve according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

4. Install correctly and tighten the bolts evenly

Place the valve between the two flanges, align it, and tighten the bolts in a cross sequence to the specified torque.

5. Check the pressure and working conditions

Make sure the pressure, temperature, and medium are within the permitted limits of the valve. If it is used to regulate flow, confirm that the valve is suitable for continuous throttling; do not assume that every butterfly valve is suitable for this purpose.

6. Test-operate before putting into service

Turn the handwheel to check the stroke, the smoothness of the gearbox, and the sealing ability. Test for tightness according to the appropriate technical procedure; do not use excessive force when the butterfly valve is stuck.

Frequently asked questions

How many turns does the stainless steel gear operated butterfly valve need to close fully?

  • It depends on the gearbox ratio for each size. Contact An Phu Thanh for more information.

Can the gear operated butterfly valve withstand higher pressure than the lever operated one?

  • No. The rated pressure is determined by the valve body and the seat. The gearbox and handwheel only make operation lighter and keep the opening angle more stable.

For DN100, should I choose a lever or a gear operated butterfly valve?

  • If you only fully open and fully close, and the operator stands right beside the valve, a lever is enough. If you need to regulate flow, the pipeline vibrates, or you want slow closing, choose the stainless steel gear operated butterfly valve.

Can the valve be used for hot water?

  • Yes, if the temperature limit of the seat allows it.
