The BTL pressure reducing valve, Model 200X-16, is a specialized hydraulic control valve that automatically reduces a high and fluctuating inlet pressure to a stable outlet pressure fixed at the set value. Regardless of changes in flow rate or upstream pressure, the valve maintains a stable downstream pressure, protecting the piping system and the water-using equipment behind it.

This product is currently imported and genuinely distributed by An Phu Thanh in the full size range from DN50 to DN350 in Vietnam.

Operating principle and construction of the BTL 200X-16 pressure reducing valve

The BTL 200X-16 pressure reducing valve is designed to operate on the principle of pressure balance between the control chamber above the diaphragm and a pressure signal taken from the downstream side of the valve. In the normal state, when the downstream pressure is lower than or equal to the set point, the pilot valve opens partially, allowing high-pressure water from the upstream side to enter the control chamber above the diaphragm and push the disc open, in order to maintain the downstream pressure at the desired level.

When the downstream pressure tends to rise above the set point, for example because the downstream consumption drops suddenly while the upstream pressure remains high, the pilot valve senses this change and closes down, reducing the flow of water entering the control chamber. The pressure in the chamber gradually falls, causing the disc to move toward closing, throttling the flow more in order to bring the downstream pressure back to the set point.

Conversely, when the downstream pressure falls below the set point, the pilot valve opens wider, increasing the pressure in the control chamber and pushing the disc open further to increase the flow rate, compensating so that the downstream pressure returns to the set level.

Installation location of the BTL 200X-16 pressure reducing valve

The BTL pressure reducing valve is installed on the main pipeline, usually after the pump or high-pressure source, after a Y-strainer, and between two isolation valves.

The pressure signal line is connected from the downstream side (after the valve) to the pilot valve, unlike a pressure relief valve, which takes its signal from the upstream side. This is a point that needs special attention when connecting, to avoid confusing two types of industrial valves whose external construction is nearly identical.

During installation, make sure the valve is installed in the correct flow direction as marked on the valve body, so that the source pressure ahead of the valve is always higher than the desired set pressure behind it. This is because a pressure reducing valve can only reduce pressure; it cannot increase pressure in reverse if the supply pressure is insufficient.

Note: leave enough open space above the valve to allow adjustment of the set pressure on the pilot valve and maintenance of the diaphragm assembly when necessary.

Common applications of the 200X-16 pressure reducing valve

In water supply systems of high-rise buildings and apartments

In high-rise buildings, the water supply pressure from the roof tank or booster pump system on the lower floors is usually very high because of the large static head. Design standards, however, normally limit the pressure at points of use to a safe level, in order to avoid damaging sanitary fixtures and flexible hoses or causing noise when taps are opened. To solve this, pressure reducing valves are installed at the start of each zone or each floor, dividing the system into several pressure zones.

In urban water supply networks

In the clean water distribution networks of water utilities, the BTL pressure reducing valve is installed at pressure regulating stations, helping to control pressure evenly between areas near to and far from the pump station. This limits pipe bursts and leakage caused by high pressure in areas close to the source.

In building fire protection systems

For high-rise buildings with a dedicated fire protection system, pressure reducing valves are installed on the fire-fighting water supply lines on the lower floors to ensure that the pressure at the discharge points (fire hose outlets, sprinkler heads) does not exceed the permitted limit of the equipment, while still maintaining the minimum water pressure needed for effective fire-fighting.

Agricultural irrigation systems

Used to stabilize the supply water pressure for drip or sprinkler irrigation systems, where the irrigation devices usually require a narrow operating pressure range. Excessively high pressure can easily break sprinkler heads or cause uneven water distribution over the irrigated area.

Industrial systems

Pressure reducing valves are used in factories that need a stable water supply for production lines and cooling systems, or where fluctuating pressure of the main supply source may affect performance or damage pressure-sensitive equipment.

On long transmission pipelines

On long-distance clean water transmission lines with sloping terrain, pressure reducing valves are installed at points of large elevation difference to break the pressure head into several sections. This avoids excessive accumulated pressure at the low points of the line, which would risk pipe bursts or leakage at joints.
