The BTL Y-strainer, Model GL41H-16, is an important pipeline protection device that acts as a “shield”, removing dirt, gravel, rust, and other mechanical impurities from the fluid stream. Installing a Y-strainer directly upstream of measuring devices such as water meters, pressure reducing valves, check valves, or pumps helps prevent jammed impellers, scratched valve discs, and system damage. This keeps the entire pipeline running smoothly and safely for operators.

Detailed construction of the BTL Y-strainer, Model GL41H-16

Like the other Y-strainers supplied by An Phu Thanh, this product has a body inclined at 45 degrees, flange connections to the BS4504 standard, and a construction of 5 main parts.

No.ComponentMaterialFunction
1BodyDuctile iron GGG50Y-shaped valve body with flanges at both ends for connection to the pipeline. The body contains the sediment collection chamber below and the chamber that holds the strainer screen
2CoverDuctile iron GGG50Seals the strainer chamber and can be removed to pull out the strainer screen for cleaning
3Strainer screenStainless steelCylindrical perforated or woven-mesh screen that retains dirt, rust, and debris in the flow before the fluid passes to the equipment downstream
4O-ringNBR/EPDMSeals between the cover and the valve body, preventing leakage at the assembly point
5BoltsCarbon steelTighten the cover to the body and secure the entire cover and strainer assembly

The inclined design of the BTL Y-strainer gives lower pressure loss than a T-type strainer. The Y-strainer can also be installed both horizontally and vertically (on a pipeline with downward flow), making it easy to fit a wide variety of pipeline layouts.

Installation locations and operating notes for the BTL Y-strainer

Common installation locations of the Y-strainer

The Y-strainer is usually installed on main pipelines, upstream of equipment that needs protection from dirt and debris, at locations such as:

  • Before the pump, to keep dirt, debris, and fragments from getting into the pump impeller and causing wear or jamming.
  • Before flow meters, pressure regulating valves, solenoid valves, or pressure reducing valves, to protect the precision mechanical parts inside from damage caused by impurities.
  • Before heat exchange equipment such as water heaters, cooling coils, or plate heat exchangers, where dirt can clog the small passages inside the equipment.

Notes on the installation orientation of the Y-strainer

For orientation, the body of the Y-strainer carries an arrow (DIRECTION) showing the flow direction. Technicians must install it in the direction of the arrow so that the fluid enters from above and passes through the strainer screen before leaving the Y-strainer. In particular, do not install it in the reverse direction, as this will defeat the purpose of the Y-strainer.

The strainer branch should be installed pointing downward or horizontal, depending on the flow direction of the system, so that the sediment chamber sits at the lowest position, allowing heavy debris and rust to accumulate and be drained out easily during cleaning. At the same time, make sure there is enough clearance below the inclined branch to remove and refit the cover and pull out the strainer screen during maintenance.

Some notes on operation

  • Monitor the pressure difference before and after the Y-strainer using a pressure gauge at each end, if the system requires continuous monitoring. When the pressure difference rises abnormally compared with the initial value, it is a sign that the strainer screen has been clogged with dirt and must be cleaned.
  • Do not operate the valve at pressures and temperatures above its rated values, specifically PN16 and a maximum working temperature of 80°C, to avoid deforming the Y-strainer body or damaging the O-ring.
  • For newly installed systems, or after pipeline repairs, the strainer screen must be cleaned more often during the initial operating period, because weld slag and rust left over from construction remain in the pipeline.

Maintenance and screen cleaning guide

  • Before removing the Y-strainer cover for cleaning, close the isolation valves at both ends of the pipeline. Release the pressure and drain all remaining fluid in the valve chamber for safety, to avoid fluid at high pressure or temperature spraying out when the cover is opened.
  • Remove the bolts securing the Y-strainer cover and pull the strainer screen out, vertically or at an angle depending on the actual installation orientation of the strainer branch.
  • Clean the screen by rinsing under pressurized water or using a soft brush to remove deposits on the mesh surface. Avoid prying off deposits with sharp, hard objects, as this can tear or deform the stainless steel screen, reducing its filtering ability or causing holes later.
  • Inspect the O-ring before refitting the cover, and replace it with a new one if there are signs of hardening, cracks, or deformation. Because this rubber part ages easily with time and operating temperature, reusing a damaged gasket is a common cause of leaks after maintenance.
  • After reassembly, tighten the bolts with even force in a symmetrical sequence to ensure the cover presses evenly against the O-ring, avoiding one-sided tightening that causes local leakage.
  • The periodic cleaning frequency should be determined by the quality of the actual water or fluid in each system. Normally, inspect the Y-strainer every 3 to 6 months for clean water systems, and shorten the interval for water sources with high turbidity or for systems newly put into operation.
