The BTL pressure relief valve, Model 500X-16, is an industrial hydraulic device that protects the safety of piping systems. The valve works through a mechanism that automatically brings the fluid pressure back to the permitted set point. When the pressure in the pipeline exceeds the safe set level, the valve opens automatically and discharges some of the fluid to reduce the pressure. When the pressure returns to equilibrium, the valve closes completely, helping to prevent overpressure that could burst pipes or damage equipment.

Main construction of the BTL 500X-16 pressure relief valve
The BTL 500X-16 pressure relief valve is a pilot-controlled type. It operates entirely on the hydraulic pressure of the fluid in the pipeline itself and requires no electrical power. The main construction of the product includes the following parts:
| No. | Component | Material | Function |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Body | Ductile iron | Main valve shell with flanges at both ends, containing the disc cavity and the upper control chamber |
| 2 | Seat | Brass | Fixed seating surface inside the valve body, working with the disc to form the seal when the valve is closed |
| 3 | Shaft | Stainless steel | Central support shaft, transmitting motion from the diaphragm down to the disc |
| 4 | Gasket | EPDM | Additional sealing gasket at the internal assembly faces of the valve body |
| 5 | Disc | Ductile iron | Main opening/closing element, moving axially to regulate or block the flow through the valve body |
| 6 | Diaphragm | EPDM | Elastic rubber membrane separating the upper control chamber from the main fluid cavity, directly acted on by the control water pressure to push the disc closed or open |
| 8 | Stem | Stainless steel | Fastening part that secures the shaft and diaphragm assembly |
| 9 | Guide stem | Stainless steel | Guide shaft ensuring the disc moves along the correct axial line |
| 10 | Spring | Stainless steel | Assists the closing force or balances the disc position during operation |
| 11 | Pressure relief pilot valve | Brass | Pressure-sensing pilot valve and the “brain” of the whole system, opening or closing at the set pressure to release or hold water in the upper control chamber above the diaphragm |
| 12 | Bonnet | Ductile iron | Seals the upper control chamber, housing the diaphragm assembly and the spring |
| 13 | Bolts | Stainless steel | Fasten the bonnet and the component assemblies to the valve body |
| 14 | Needle valve | Brass | Small throttling valve on the signal pipe, adjusting the opening/closing speed of the main valve for smooth operation and to avoid oscillation or hydraulic shock |

Operating principle of the BTL 500X-16 pressure relief valve
The BTL pressure relief valve works on the principle of pressure balance between the control chamber above the diaphragm and the main flow pressure in the valve body. This type of device does not rely on a plain mechanical spring alone, as a traditional spring-type safety valve does.
In the normal state, the pressure in the control chamber above the diaphragm is kept equal to or higher than the pipeline pressure and, together with the assisting spring, holds the disc firmly closed on the seat. When the pipeline pressure rises above the set point on the pilot valve, the pilot valve opens and discharges water from the control chamber above the diaphragm to the outside (usually toward the downstream side or out of the system). The pressure in the control chamber drops faster than it can be replenished, upsetting the force balance that holds the disc. The disc is lifted off the seat by the pressure from the main flow, opening a discharge path to relieve the excess pressure in the system.
When the pipeline pressure falls below the set point, the pilot valve closes, water is replenished into the control chamber, and the disc slowly closes back to its original position.
The needle valve controls the speed of water entering and leaving the control chamber, and thereby the opening/closing speed of the main disc. This lets the valve react fast enough when pressure must be released, without opening or closing so abruptly that it causes reverse hydraulic shock in the system.

Operating guide for the BTL 500X-16 pressure relief valve
Before putting the BTL pressure relief valve into operation, set the relief pressure threshold on the pilot valve according to the protection requirements of the system. This can normally be done by adjusting the set screw on the pilot valve while watching the pressure gauge mounted on the main valve body.
Adjust the needle valve to control the reaction speed of the valve: opening too fast can cause unstable pressure oscillation; closing too slowly may fail to relieve pressure in time during a rapid pressure spike.
During operation, monitor the pressure gauge on the valve body to supervise the actual system pressure. If the pressure frequently reaches the relief threshold of the valve, investigate the root cause of the pressure rise in the system, for example a pump running in the wrong mode, rather than relying on the pressure relief valve alone to deal with the problem continuously.
Periodically inspect the signal pipe and the needle valve to make sure they are not blocked. This is one of the common reasons why a BTL pressure relief valve fails to react in time or deviates from its original set point.
